The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a working-memory program to improve the cognitive status of people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Given the increasing use of technology in modern-day society, further research is required to provide evidence supporting working-memory training devices that are easily accessible for people with memory deficits

Lipid consumption in coral larvae differs among sites: a consideration of environmental history in a global ocean change scenario

The success of early life-history stages is an environmentally sensitive bottleneck for many marine invertebrates. Responses of larvae to environmental stress may vary due to differences in maternal investment of energy stores and acclimatization/adaptation of a population to local environmental conditions. In this study, we compared two populations from sites with different environmental regimes (Moorea and Taiwan). We assessed the responses of Pocillopora damicornis larvae to two future co-occurring environmental stressors: elevated temperature and ocean acidification. Larvae from Taiwan were more sensitive to temperature, producing fewer energy-storage lipids under high temperature. In general, planulae in Moorea and Taiwan responded similarly to pCO(2). Additionally, corals in the study sites with different environments produced larvae with different initial traits, which may have shaped the different physiological responses observed. Notably, under ambient conditions, planulae in Taiwan increased their stores of wax ester and triacylglycerol in general over the first 24 h of their dispersal, whereas planulae from Moorea consumed energy-storage lipids in all cases. Comparisons of physiological responses of P. damicornis larvae to conditions of ocean acidification and warming between sites across the species\u27 biogeographic range illuminates the variety of physiological responses maintained within P. damicornis, which may enhance the overall persistence of this species in the light of global climate change

A novel self-assembled oligopeptide amphiphile for biomimetic mineralization of enamel

Background Researchers are looking for biomimetic mineralization of ena/mel to manage dental erosion. This study evaluated biomimetic mineralization of demineralized enamel induced by a synthetic and self-assembled oligopeptide amphiphile (OPA). Results The results showed that the OPA self-assembled into nano-fibres in the presence of calcium ions and in neutral acidity. The OPA was alternately immersed in calcium chloride and sodium hypophosphate solutions to evaluate its property of mineralization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed nucleation and growth of amorphous calcium phosphate along the self-assembled OPA nano-fibres when it was repetitively exposed to solutions with calcium and phosphate ions. Energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) confirmed that these nano-particles contained calcium and phosphate. Furthermore, electron diffraction pattern suggested that the nano-particles precipitated on OPA nano-fibres were comparable to amorphous calcium phosphate. Acid-etched human enamel slices were incubated at 37Ā°C in metastable calcium phosphate solution with the OPA for biomimetic mineralization. SEM and X-ray diffraction indicated that the OPA induced the formation of hydroxyapatite crystals in organized bundles on etched enamel. TEM micrographs revealed there were 20ā€“30 nm nano-amorphous calcium phosphate precipitates in the biomimetic mineralizing solution. The particles were found separately bound to the oligopeptide fibres. Biomimetic mineralization with or without the oligopeptide increased demineralized enamel microhardness. Conclusions A novel OPA was successfully fabricated, which fostered the biomimetic mineralization of demineralized enamel. It is one of the primary steps towards the design and construction of novel biomaterial for future clinical therapy of dental erosion.published_or_final_versio

Computational algebraic methods in efficient estimation

A strong link between information geometry and algebraic statistics is made by investigating statistical manifolds which are algebraic varieties. In particular it it shown how first and second order efficient estimators can be constructed, such as bias corrected Maximum Likelihood and more general estimators, and for which the estimating equations are purely algebraic. In addition it is shown how Gr\"obner basis technology, which is at the heart of algebraic statistics, can be used to reduce the degrees of the terms in the estimating equations. This points the way to the feasible use, to find the estimators, of special methods for solving polynomial equations, such as homotopy continuation methods. Simple examples are given showing both equations and computations. *** The proof of Theorem 2 was corrected by the latest version. Some minor errors were also corrected.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure

Large-eddy simulatoin of flow field and pollutant dispession in urban street canyons under unstable atmospheric

Thermal stratification plays an important role in the air flow and pollutant dispersion processes. This study employed a large-eddy simulation (LES) code based on a one-equation subgrid-scale (SGS) model to investigate the flow field and pollutant dispersion characteristics inside urban street canyons. The unstable thermal stratification was simulated by heating the ground level of the street canyons. The thermal buoyancy forces were, using the Boussinesq assumption, taken into account in both the Navier-Stokes equations and the transport equation for SGS turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). The LES had been validated against experimental data obtained in wind tunnel studies before it was applied to study the detailed turbulence and pollutant dispersion characteristics in urban street canyons. The effects of different bulk Richardson number (Rb) were investigated. Several typical temperature differences between the street bottom and ambient air were configured to simulate the scenarios occurring at different times during the day.postprintThe 7th International Conference of Urban Climate (ICUC-7), Yokohama, Japan, 29 June-3 July 2009

Poster Abstract Session - Influenza Vaccines: no. 533BACKGROUND: We performed intradermal 2010/11 trivalent influenza vaccination (TIV) in adult subjects delivered by two different intradermal (ID) devices, using 20% and 60% of the standard dose and compared the immunogenicity and safety with full dose intramuscular (IM) immunization. METHODS: This is a prospective randomized trial conducted from December 2010 to March 2011, comprising chronically ill adults. Subjects were randomly assigned ā€¦postprin

There are scores of references to plants and herbs in William Shakespeare's plays; he was obviously very knowledgeable about their perceived effects. The secret to the highly potent love potion Oberon asks Puck to find, lies in the purple, yellow and white flower, ā€˜loveā€inā€idlenessā€™, a folk name for the wild pansy (Viola tricolour). When scientists from Royal Society of Chemistry and Quest International put this to the test 400 years later, they concluded that ā€˜Wild pansies were noted in herbal folklore medicine
